The Slitrig Water, or River Slitrig, joins the River Teviot in the centre of Hawick, a mill town in the Scottish borders. This topographical watercolour shows the Auld Brig or Old Bridge over the Slitrig in the foreground, with the New Bridge further downstream and the junction with the Teviot in the distance. The New Bridge was built by public subscription in 1776 and later became known as Drumlanrig Bridge.
The painting has been attributed to Charles Catton senior (1728-1798) but it could be by his son Charles Catton junior (1756-1819), who produced several topographical images of the Scottish borders in the early 1790s or thereabouts. Various prints of Catton's border paintings were published by Francis Jukes from 1793 onwards, including a series entitled Six Scottish Views. Catton junior emigrated to America in 1804 and died in 1819.
