Dress worn by Irina Baronova as the Street Dancer in Le Beau Danube, Leonide Massine's Ballet Russes Highlights, 1945. Maroon 'Bordeaux' velvet dance dress with low cut heart shaped bodice, the back cut to a V with high sides forming bases for pink elastic double shoulder straps. The upper edge of the bodice is trimmed with narrow cream lace. The low waisted bodice is boned, at centre front, below the bust, at either side seam and to either side of the back. The skirt is almost circular. The skirt is lined with off white net set with twelve rows of off white gathered lace, the lowest falling beneath the edge of the skirt.

Object history
This costume was worn by Irina Baronova in excerpts from Leonide Massine's ballet 'Le Beau Danube', performed by Leonide Massine's Ballet Russe Highlights during a summer tour in 1945. The music for the ballet was by Johann Strauss (arranged & orchestrated by Roger Desormiere). The designer for the costumes was not credited, although they are after the original designs by Count Etienne de Beaumont. Irina Baronova appeared with Massine's company only in the summer of 1945.
