Headdress worn by Adeline Genée in the Hungarian dance performed to Brahms ‘Hungarian Dance No.4’ in The Bachelor Belles, first performed at Chestnut Street Opera House, , Philadelphia, USA, 3 October 1910. The book for and lyrics for the musical comedy The Bachelor Belles were by Harry B. Smith, and the music was composed by Raymond Hubble but Genée was responsible for her own dances. The costume reflects traditional Hungarian dress.
Headdress of a wide headband with trailing ribbons at the back matching the ribbons on the bodice and skirt of Genée’s celebratory Dirndl-style costume decorated in the Hungarian colours of rust-red, green and white.
Photographs of Adeline Genée wearing this costume were extensively reproduced for publicity purposes in the 1910s one of which may be see in Ivor Guest Adeline Genée A Pictorial Record published in conjunction with the exhibition at the V&A 1978.
