Measured by David Constable, independent scholar and spoon expert.
Marks and inscriptions
  • Engraved on the back of the finial: 'A gift / Alice Poole / from her aunt / Goble . 1701' [this inscription usually transcribed 'A gift to Alice ...', but the word 'too' is not clear and indeed could also be read as part of the scrolling engraved ornament around the finial.]
  • The Dublin marks and maker's mark are struck over the engraving on the back of the spoon shaft.
  • Inscribed `A gift to Alice Poole from her Aunt Goble. 1701'
  • Town mark: Cork

Engraved 'A GIFT TO ALICE POOL FROM HER AUNT GOBLE. 1701'. Robert Goble, one of the foremost silversmiths in Cork at this date, also made the city's mace (see Case 20).
