Christmas and Easter

The church calendar revolved around the key feasts
of Christmas and Easter, celebrating the birth and
resurrection of Christ. These pages were therefore
particularly decorated. Here, a large initial ‘R’ begins
the Christmas Eve office. It shows the Virgin Mary
at prayer while an angel announces Christ’s birth to
Joseph. Mary sits in a cosy interior, with a basket of
colourful yarn at her feet. The Easter initial, from a
different antiphonary, depicts the risen Christ stepping
out of his tomb.
