(May 2023)
Leather manufacture and trade in London once centred around this vast factory in Bermondsey.
The photographer was just 17 when he took these pictures. His family owned the factory and had been involved in the trade for over 300 years. The images are part of a larger set that show the stages of production and the hard manual labour required in the industry. They were commissioned for the International Exhibition held in London in 1862, and exhibited there alongside leather products.
