Ward-Jackson, Peter, Italian Drawings, Volume Two: 17th-18th Century , London, 1979, pp.64-65 , cat. n. 742, illus. The following is the full text of the entry: MARATTA,CARLO (1625-1713) 742 Head of a bearded young man in profile; life size Inscribed on the back of the mount in ink in an 18th or 19th century hand 'Carlo Maratta' Black chalk on grey paper l2 5/8 x 10 1/8 (321 x 257) Dyce 317 PROVENANCE Dyce Bequest 1869 LITERATURE Dyce Catalogue no. 317 (as 'anonymous, ascribed to Guido Reni') The departmental records show that Bodmer (date unknown) attributed the drawing to Annibale Carraci. The old attribution to Maratta is, however, more convincing than Bodmer's Carracci or the previous attribution to Guido Reni. Compare the chalk drawings of two heads at Windsor Castle (head of St Joseph and head of Holofernes, Blunt and Cooke, Windsor, nos. 278 and 288, pl. 56 and 57). Our drawing is evidently part of a cartoon and probably represents the head of Christ.
