Production | The four panels are arranged in order, and are identified as A/d, B/d, C/d and D/d. The imagery used is derived from Johns’ painting ‘Untitled 1972’ (collection Museum Ludwig, Cologne), and is composed, reading from left to right, of overall groups of lines in green, orange and blue on shades of white/grey, two panels of stone-shapes in white, red and black, and a final panel of body-parts on timber struts. Panel A/d - 14 colours, panel B/d - 10 colours, panel C/d - 11 colours, panel D/d – 14 colours. Each panel is embossed with the pattern of the previous panel in the sequence (A/d having D/d’s pattern), which was done with photo-engraved zinc plates from stencils hand-cut by the artist. (Among other works by Johns since 1972 using this imagery are the etchings in “Fizzles/ Foirades”: a copy of the book is in the Library). The prints were made at Gemini GEL, Los Angeles, 1974, the artist having worked on the project 1973-4. They are in Laurence Barker Grey hand-made paper. |
