This cut-out decorated initial 'D' (an initial composed of non-figural, non-zoomorphic decorative elements) likely came from a larger liturgical manuscript. It may have been made in the Netherlands or possibly Flanders during the sixteenth century. Composed entirely of burnished gold leaf (gold paint that has been polished to shine) and set upon a blue background with white floral decorations.

Brief description
Cut-out decorated initial from a liturgical manuscript. Initial D in gold on a blue gournd with a red interior with white conventional floral ornament. Netherlands (?), 16th century. A duplicate number MS.162 was assigned to this object in error and was subsequently cancelled.
Physical description
This cut-out decorated initial 'D' (an initial composed on non-figural, non-zoomorphic decorative elements) may have come from a Netherlandish or possibly Flemish liturgical boo used during the celebration of the Christian Mass. Double-sided (now pasted onto card). Colour pigments and burnished gold leaf.

Recto: Burnsihed gold leaf initial 'D' with red and blue and lead white foliate decoration.

Verso: Pasted onto card.
