New California Views

Photograph
1979 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The central landscape in this photograph seems at first glance like a window onto a wilderness far removed from the surrounding streetscape. It is in fact hand-painted on the side of a truck, an illusion paralleled by the imitation wood finish on the side of the car. Welpott stated that he liked the way photography ‘holds together opposites: light and dark, beautiful and ugly, sublime and banal.’
