Engraving featuring a panoramic view of beachgoers engaged in various leisurely pursuits including reading the paper, playing music and engaging in conversation. There are children shovelling dirt, dipping their toes in the water and looking through telescopes. In the background is an obelisk, a number of buildings and a cliff. Underneath the engraving is the title, 'Life at the Sea-side. Ramsgate 1854' and 'Engraved by C.W.Sharpe'. On the bottom left, it says 'Painted by W.P.Frith R.A.', and on the bottom right, 'Art Union of London 1859'.

Object history
The original painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1854, and was bought for the collection of Queen Victoria. There is a replica, painted fifty-one years later, which is now in the Russell-Cotes Museum, Bournemouth.
