There are children shovelling dirt, dipping their toes in the water and looking through telescopes. In the background are a large obelisk and several buildings. Underneath the engraving is the title, 'Life at the Sea-side. Ramsgate 1854' and 'Engraved by C.W. Sharpe'. On the bottom left, it says 'Painted by W.P. Frith R.A.', and on the bottom right, 'Art Union of London 1859'.

Object history | The original painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1854, and was bought for the collection of Queen Victoria. There is a replica, painted fifty-one years later, which is now in the Russell-Cotes Museum, Bournemouth. |
