Charles Thurston Thompson (1816–68)
Raphael Cartoon, with Condition Report Annotations
About 1858

The Raphael Cartoons were photographed at Hampton Court Palace before they came to the Museum. Thurston Thompson had a special camera constructed to hold large glass negatives. Full daylight was required for the exposure, so the fragile Cartoons were hung out of the Palace windows. The Inspector-General for Art marked these prints to identify areas requiring treatment – possibly the first use of photography for conservation.
