Marks and inscriptions
The centre of the strainer bowl is punched with a lion passant (the mark for sterling silver), the leopard's head crowned (for the London assay office) and the letter 'P' (date letter for the assay year 1730-31). The maker's mark and the lion passant are punched on the underside of one of the handles.

Object history
The strainer was bequeathed to the Museum by the collector and Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, Lt-Col George Babington Croft Lyon (1855-1926).
