Object history | Historical significance: Tristram Hillier studied at the Slade School of Art in London under Henry Tonks between 1926 and 27. He subsequently went to Paris, studying at the Academie Colarossi, and until 1940 he lived mainly in the South of France. Hillier's work shows the influence of the Surrealists. In his enigmatic compositions incongruous objects are often juxtaposed, and an atmosphere of dreamlike strangeness is evoked. Like his oil and tempera paintings, this pencil drawing is very smoothly and meticulously executed. |
