Jameel Gallery Leaf from Qur'an Manuscript Middle East 800-900 By 750, Qur'an manuscripts were written on leaves of parchment that were wider than they were long. This 'horizontal' format probably served to distinguish them from other books. The style of script employed, called Kufic, also had a horizontal emphasis, and a relatively thick nib was used, giving the script a plump appearance. Coloured dots indicated the vowels.
