Hofmann was a member of the Berlin Secession and other progressive artist groups of the fin de siecle such as the Vereinigung der XI. His paintings and prints often focussed on the adolescent naked male form, much like other artists such as Henry Scott Tuke, aligned with the so-called Uranian movement of the late 19th century.
