    Object history
'This and the following drawings (Circ.260-273-1972) were made while the artist was working on the etchings illustrating the Grimm’s Fairy Tales, during 1969. They are small sketched and scribbles, trying out ideas and deciding on poses for certain figures. Mostly drawn in ink, but with some pencil studies, the drawings do not parallel the etchings very closely. The artist draws freely on the plate when etching, with very little preliminary work. He did, however take photographs in Germany, and he did also use other sources, e.g. a Leonardo Da Vinci drawing, for his images. See Circ. 126 and a to e-1971 and Circ.133 to 171-1971 for the prints themselves, and information on the publication.' [Taken from Departmental Circulation Register 1972]
