Craig used wood engraving for his highly innovative stage designs, helping to revive its popularity at the turn of the 20th century. In this work, he exploited the strong black and white contrasts of the medium to explore a lighting effect. He broke up the black masses by cutting dots into the block – an effect known as stippling – to evoke a starry night sky.
