McGrath studied architecture in Sydney and at
Cambridge. He and Wells Coates were employed
in the early 1930s on a series of very Modern
interiors for Broadcasting House, London and
both designed radio cases for Ekco. In 1932
Coates won an Ekco competition with a circular
design, based on the shape of the loudspeaker.
