4442-1901

Moulded wares were made by most major French glassworks including Baccarat, St. Louis and Choisy-le-Roi. Opal glass is thought to have first been made at Murano in the 1600s, although the name "opaline" was coined by the Baccarat factory in 1823. It is, traditionally, a slightly translucent glass, opacified with ashes of calcined bones, and may also be coloured with metallic oxides. This example combines several typical techniques employed with such glass with a simple, naturalistic style popular in the French factories, particularly Baccarat, in the 1860s.
