This bowl is decorated with the Eight Daoist Immortals, an extremely popular motif in Chinese decorative art. The Immortals are said to have been historical figures, who had each attained immortality in their own way. The eight included the old and the young, the rich and the poor, men and women, non-disabled and disabled. Here they are shown crossing the sea on small flower boats. The immortals holds their attributes in their hands to conjure up magical power to make the boats move forward.
