Album
ca. 1794 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This pattern book shows a variety of grate, fencing and balcony designs from the late 18th century. It is produced by M & G Skidmore, Founders and Stove Grate Manufacturers of High Holborn and Clerkenwell. It dates from ca. 1794 and the techniques range from a deeply incised engraving to hand-coloured aquatint.

This album is an example of an early trade catalogue, aimed at retailers making fireplace orders. It documents shifts in taste in metalwork, historic interiors and in graphic communication. It also provides an insight into commercial printed material from the 18th century. This printed ephemera opens a view into everyday surroundings of this particular period.

Gallery label
M. and G. Skidmore, of High Holborn and Clerkenwell, were founders and stove grate manufacturers. It was common at this time for manufacturers of all kinds (ceramics, cutlery, furniture and jewellery) to issue printed pattern books as a way of marketing and promoting their products to retailers and consumers. This is thought to be the earliest example of a catalogue issued by a founder.(11/09/2017)
