Gallery label | Fragmented Illuminations: Medieval and Renaissance Manuscript Cuttings at the V&A, 08/09/2021 - 26/06/2022, rooms 88A-90 Devotion to the Saints The cult of the saints occupied a large part of the church calendar. Some were widely worshipped, while others were specific to a particular community or geographical area. The feast of the Translation of St Dominic on 24 May commemorated the move of the saint’s body to a grander tomb in 1233, twelve years after his death [left]. The inclusion of this feast and that of St Thomas Aquinas [right], a prominent Dominican friar, means that this antiphonary was made for a Dominican congregation. Leaves with initial ‘A’ with Translation of St Dominic and initial ‘F’ with St Thomas Aquinas teaching, from a Dominican antiphonary Southern Netherlands or Eastern France, about 1300–25 Ink, gold, watercolour and bodycolour on parchment Museum nos. 8997G and 8997E |
