Devotion to the Saints

The cult of the saints occupied a large part of the
church calendar. Some were widely worshipped, while
others were specific to a particular community or
geographical area. The feast of the Translation of
St Dominic on 24 May commemorated the move of
the saint’s body to a grander tomb in 1233, twelve years
after his death [left]. The inclusion of this feast and
that of St Thomas Aquinas [right], a prominent
Dominican friar, means that this antiphonary was
made for a Dominican congregation.
