Object history
Cornelius Varley patented his Graphic Telescope on 5 April 1811 and it was subsequently much employed in the accurate representation of landscape and in portraiture. The telescope is described on p.26 of Andrew Pritchard's Practical treatise on Optical Instruments, 1850. Other portraits by John Varley drawn with the aid of the telescope are E.1139-1927 and E.1179-1927.
