Wallpaper design with two long adjacent motifs of thistle and a rose with a linking row above and below the fleur-de-lys. They are enclosed by an ogival framework of stems and leaves punctuated by the faces of lions. The rose is surrounded by a scroll, inscribed 'Nulla rosa sine spina'. Much of the pattern has been pricked for transfer.

Object history
Probably unexecuted. There are strong stylistic connections between this design and a group of 'historical' papers that were made early in 1851. Most of these papers were ultimately rejected and it seems likely that this one was too.
