The poster represents the Military Chief of the White Army as a heroic and noble figure. Such ennobled images of White Army military leaders were designed to propagate the anti-bolshevik message of the White movement and engender support. General-Lieutenant Afrikan Bogaevsky was the Ataman (Chief) of Cossaks - a military formation which existed in Russia from about 1400. (The Cossaks, in particular, were usually the initiators of pogroms). Bogaevsky belonged to the group of Cossaks which fought on the side of the White Army - the Cossaks were divided - the other part fought on the Bolshevik side. After the White Army's defeat by the Bolsheviks, Bogaevsky emigrated to France, where he died in 1934.
