In 1973, with US backing, General Pinochet led a military coup which overthrew the democratically elected government of Salvador Allende. Pinochet's dictatorship (1973-1990) has been widely condemned over human rights abuses. At the time, left wing protest groups in many countries championed the cause of the 'Chilean people' versus the right-wing military junta, also implicating American involvement in ensuing violence.
