Design for the decoration of the Oriental Courts

Drawing
1863-1864 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Drawing in pencil, wash, gouache, watercolour, gold paint, and pen and ink on paper. This coloured design shows a highly ornate decorative scheme for a section of arcade with semi-circular arches. The spandrels of the two left-hand-most arches, one of which is only partially indicated, feature the same complex pattern of stylised floral motifs in many colours. The spandrels of the right-hand-most arch depicted feature a different pattern, comprising arabesques and a single, repeating floral motif. The ornamentation of the piers is dominated by single, block colours, although some floral and geometric pattern is included. Borders decorated with frets abound throughout the design, but some spandrel and impost decoration is not shown. Some foxing, staining, and compass marks. Faint letter 'R' written on four of the piers.
