Place of origin |
Black and white line block print on Japanese vellum depicting two figures, both wearing long robes, with a man, John the Baptist (Jokanaan), on the left of the image and a woman, Salome, on the right. Salome's robe is decorated with stylised butterflies and decorative motifs and is partially open so that her breasts and stomach are exposed. She wears an elaborate headdress and appears to be in the act of speaking to John who looks sternly at her, with his long flowing black hair framing his face. To the right of the image are some stylised flowers, perhaps roses, which appear to be growing out of the ground.
