The Two Great Temples at Paestum
About 1783-1785
Cozens was one of the leading early English watercolourists, with a softly modulated style that evoked a mood of gentle melancholy. The ancient Greek temples at Paestum in southern Italy had been rediscovered in the 1760s. Cozens visited them in 1782 and made pencil drawings, on which this watercolour is based.
