In 1973, with US backing, General Pinochet led a military coup which overthrew the democratically elected government of Salvador Allende. Pinochet's dictatorship (1973-1990) has been widely condemned over human rights abuses. At the time left wing protest groups in many countries championed the cause of the 'Chilean people' versus the right-wing military junta. The placard in this poster reads 'on these hereditary lands we say no to exploitation.' The bold mask-like faces and the screenprint technique show the influence of Cuban revolutionary posters.
