Abbie Hoffman (1936-1989), Jerry Rubin (1938-1994) and Paul Krassner (born 1932) co-founded the Yippies (Youth International Party) in 1967 with the aim of defending civil liberties while promoting alternative values. They modelled their group loosely on the aims of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, which promoted equal rights and peace. Yippie activism involved promoting counter-culture movements, including drug use.
The illustrator Bramley's style appropriates that of the counter-culture comics characters the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, created by Gilbert Shelton in 1968.
