Physical description | Evening coat worn by the actress and writer Elizabeth Robins (1862-1952) possibly in an unidentified production. Collarless waistlength black wool coat. The sleeves are sert ow on the shoulder and open out into wide bell shaped cuffs at a ppoint just above the elbow. The suface of the coat is decorated with a stylised pattern of leaves and flowers which is executed using narrow lengths of woven gold braid metallic braid. The wide cuffs and hem of the coat are edged with black and gold silk fringing. The interior of the coat is lined with an acid yellow silk. It fastens at the centre front with a vertical row of 5 pairs of alternating hooks and eyes. There is an asymmetrical vent, some 31cms in length, at the centre back. This overlaps with the exterior of the coat, which is also edged with fringing as are the two small 'V' shaped vents added at the proper left and proper right side seam. |
