Rembrandt was Gerbrand van den Eeckhout’s teacher and friend. This drawing is one of a group of studies of men and women in ornate costumes that were previously thought to be the work of Rembrandt. The man’s richly patterned coat and elaborate wide-brimmed hat decorated with feathers were popular throughout Europe in the 1560s.
