Guilio Romano (about 1499-1546)
Design for a vessel, perhaps a salt cellar
Italian, about 1540-1550
Pen and ink and wash

Guilio had been one of Raphael's chief assistants
before moving to Mantua in 1524 to work for the
Gonzaga family. There he designed and decorated
the Palazzo del Te. He was also a prolific designer
of silver, goldsmith's work, jewellery and tapestry.
Guilio's designs for silver typically combine
classical motifs, fantastic monsters, vegetation and
studies from nature. They were highly praises by
contemporaries such as Vasari and were to be a
major source of Mannerist designers.
