Object history
Prince Albert inspecting the model for the Memorial to the 1851 Exhibition, set up in the quadrangle of the South Kensington Museum. The building in the background is the Sheepshanks gallery with the Iron Museum ('The Brompton Boilers') next to it. Sir Henry Cole and his dog are in the left foreground; and at the centre of the group behind the Prince is Captain Francis Fowke. The Memorial was erected in 1863 in the gardens of The Royal Horticultural Society, but was moved to its present position behind the Albert Hall between c.1890 and 1893.
