Marks and inscriptions
  • 'AVTVMN'
  • '[Illegible] [to be copied from those in design for "Summer"] / Edward J Poynter[,] / [May 11/71.]' (Very faint note written in pencil across the top of the design which is almost completely illegible. It may give an instruction for the execution of this design in tiles, with certain details to be copied from Poynter's highly finished design for the 'Summer' tile panel (Museum object number 7917:2). The note is signed by Poynter and dated, possibly to indicate 11th May 1871.)
Object history
Poynter was invited to tender for the decoration of the V&A Grill Room in November 1865. Judging from the nineteenth Report of the Science and Art Department, the Grill Room's large tile panels, derived from designs including this one, were all installed by the end of 1871.
