Viktor Koretsky had been active as a poster designer and graphic artist from the 1930s and was among the artists honoured with state prizes by the Soviet government in 1942 in recognition of their contribution to the war effort. This Cold War critique of American racism, illustrating the face of the Statue of Liberty disfigured by a lynching scene, evokes the documentary impact of photomontage used in his earlier compositions.
