Print
1865 (published)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

An engraving depicting proofs for the title page and frontispiece to 'Goblin Market and other poems by Christina Rossetti'. The frontispiece illustrates a young woman, kneeling on the ground, cutting a lock from her long golden hair. The girl is surrounded by a group of anthropomorphic animals including a cat, and owl and a parrot amongst others. Some of the animals are carrying trays of fruit that they appear to be offering to the woman. In the background, to the left, another woman can be seen climbing a hill carrying a heavy jug of water. The title page depicts two women, shown in an embrace, asleep in bed. One of the women appears to be dreaming; this is represented by a circle in the upper left corner containing an image of anthropomorphic animals carrying fruit.

Object history
'The frontispiece was cut (his first woodcut) by the celebrated Wm Morris; the Title-page by Linton. These cuts are of course merely what appear in the printed volume, but I suppose this specimen was printed off for Gabriel's & Christina's inspection before the vol. was published.' (Note by William Rossetti from Departmental Notes).
