This illustration to the story of King Arthur and the Knights of the round table depicts La Belle Isoud, the wife of King Mark. Misinformed of the death of her lover Sir Tristram, she is preparing to impale herself on a sword which she has tied to the trunk of a plum tree when her husband intervenes.
