Similar groups are also recorded in French, German and English porcelain. They derive from a fountain designed by Charles Le Brun and executed by Jean-Baptiste Tuby for the gardens at Versailles in 1672, in this case possibly by way of a silver candelabrum by Thomas Germain.

Acquired as Italian or French, ca. 1770.

Bibliographic reference
For the attribution to Pont-aux-Choux, the dating to c. 1755, and the indentification as a candlestick, see J. V. G. Mallet, 'Two Children and a Fish', in French Porcelain Society Journal, Vol. 1, 2003, pp. 131-47. Mallet illustrates similar compostions in French, German and English ceramics, and discusses the possibility of derivation from Versailles garden sculpture designed by Le Brun and executed by Jean-Baptiste Tuby, possibly by way of a French silver prototype.
