Object history
Acquisition type: Gift
Production
Acquired as Paris or Chantilly, late 18th century; re-labelled as probably Chantilly. For a very similar piece, but with different handle, see G. le Duc, 'Rue de Charenton Parisian White Earth in the English Manner', International Ceramics Fair Handbook, 1998, p. 20, fig. 3, where attributed to Rue de Charenton and dated to ca. 1745. Examined by Christian Maire November 2004, who considered it a copy of a Pont-aux-Choux design (which has a more sculptural treatment to the mask), and who suggested it may have been made at Sceaux, where similar floral patterns were painted on faience.
