Acquisition type: Bequest
Production
Acquired as Sinceny. Labelled as Sinceny c. 1735. Reproduced as c. 1733-7 in Arthur Lane, French Faïence, 1948, pl. 32A. According to a note in the register: 'this is one of six plates of this type. Mr Paul Bennot, who is descended from the original manufacturers of Sinceny, stated that he posessed a book illustrated with engravings of Salvator Rosa, and that the designs were taken from the book'. October 1951.' For another similar see Galeries nationales du Grand Palais, Paris, exhibition catalogue, 'Faïences Françaies, XVIe-XVIIIe siècles', 1980, cat. 404, where dated to c. 1750. See also Dorothée Guillemé Brulon, Paris & Rouen - Sources et rayonnement, Histoire de la Faïence Francaise, Paris, 1998, p. 67, where these are discussed as Sinceny, but where it is noted this attribution is not followed by C. Soudée Lacombe.
Christophe Perlès suggested the plate might even be early 19th century, although still a very fine example of the factory's production (November 2009).
