Object history | From the collection of Mrs Margaret Pennington. Bought from or through W. W. Winkworth. Acquisition type: Purchase |
Production | probably 19th century; Acquired as Moustiers, about 1740-50. According to a note in the register, an exactly similar piece, similarly marked, was in the possession of Mrs Henriette Samne (?) of Anchor Antiques in 1987. Bernadette Rességnier of the Musée Cartini wrote to say that, from a photograph, she had doubts about the Samne piece because a) it is of circular section, not flat, whereas as all the ones she knows are flat; b) the mask handles are 'détachés comme à Nevers'; c) 'le dessin est lâche, et le jaune trop orangé: mais elle est signée ...' For similarly marked wares, but with 'Sc' for Solomé cadet, see Dorothée Guillemé Brulon, Moustiers and Marseilles - Sources et rayonnement, Histoire de la Faïence Francaise, Paris, 1998, p. 35. |
