The image shows a boy in a classroom, visible from the waist up, looking up from his work and sucking his pencil with a pensive expression; his pencil case and clear plastic rule are on the desk or table. He has short straight hair cut in a fringe, and is wearing a light-coloured shirt with a turn-down collar and wrist-length sleeves; his shirt is unbuttoned at the neck and his tie very much loosened. The pupils seated behind and in front of him are in soft focus and only partly visible.
