This teapot is a version of the popular théière 'Calabre' shape, although this teapot has a rounded, rather than the customary ear-shaped, handle. The théière 'Calabre' was the most common type made at the Sèvres factory in the mid-late eighteenth century. This type of teapot would probably have been made as part of a set or 'cabaret'.
Tea drinking never became as fashionable in France as in other European countries. But the practice existed at an aristocratic level as an alternative to the usual coffee and chocolate.
