Object history
Label on base: 'No 14099 ZB55'
Production
mid- or late-18th century; Acquired as 'French (?)'; reattributed to Chelsea, when the figure was thought to represent the Duke of Cumberland, and notes in the Register name further possible English sitters; examined by the FPS in 1994, when it was considered 'not French, not German, possibly North Italian'; examined by FPS again in 2002, when Errol Manners suggested that the precision of detail on the soft-paste body was similar to that on porcelain from the Este porcelain factory.
Similar figures can be found in the musée national de Céramique at Sèvres and the MAK in Vienna, attributed to Vienna. They are all illustrated in Christophe Perlès' catalogue No.11, 2010, p150.
