Object history
Acquisition type: Gift
Production
Acquired as Niderviller; attributed to Fulda in 1912 and then to Kiel; reattributed to Strasbourg by comparison with a Paul Hannong-marked plate. The plate is of the same class as C.25&A-1929 and the painting is identical to that on a plate illustrated in Dorothée Guillemé Brulon, Strasbourg & Niderviller - Sources et rayonnement, Histoire de la Faïence Francaise, Paris, 1999, p. 36, and Historiches Museum, Basel, Strassburger Keramik, 1986, cat. 117 (the V&A piece lacks the gilt border). These plates have been associated with the painter Christian-Wilhelm Löwenfink and dated to c. 1748-54. According to a note in the register this plate is considered to be of the same class as C.578-1909, but although this last has the gilt border of the Löwenfink pieces, it is much less well painted.
