This piece and companion are painted in trompe l'oeil style imitating wood (the graining imitates deal). Tray and teapot would have been part of a 'solitaire'; a tea service meant for one person composed of a tray, teapot, tea cup, sugar bowl and milk jug. Complete sets are rare.
